The parallels with Vietnam are obvious. The question is can France succeed where Americans military might failed in Korea & Vietnam & the Roman empire failed in stamping out Christianity within its empire. History tells us France is engaged in a fruitless mission because most of the appeal of religion or ideologies is their masochistic demands of their followers.
Only once has Islam been successfully vanquished from a nation, and that was only possible because Queen Isabella of Spain (God bless her) was more fanatical that the Islamist. Islam is like a cancer, it needs to be cutout with extreme prejudice.
