Here's a hint for the clueless and/or future historians :
Images of the Kaizerreich (1871-1919) that represent perhaps the Apex of Western Civilization after its recovery from the Gibbonsian Fall of Ancient Rome :

Remember : when these images of Great German Cities were made in the late 1800s, Europe had only recently caught up to the civilizational levels that the Romans had achieved more than 2k years previously.
That's right you read it here first : ancient Rome had better infrastructure (sewerage, water delivery, etc) than every European capital city up until approximately 1870.
